Not doing anything coal plant in St . Univoque Twp. could be host to campo project

Mayor Steve Arnold advocates he's disappointed Ontario Power Output plans to build part of a suggested solar electricity project on the previously coal pile at the Lambton Building Station near Courtright.

"I'm confused if it's on the right location in the exact location, " said Arnold, mayor concerning St . Clair Township where the generation station sits.

Building solar panels just where coal off-loaded from ships used to be piled could limit future a chance to access the station's loading dock, Arnold said.

"Which really creates a point for anybody who wants to develop anything appears to be, " he added.

The section, owned by Ontario Power Output, sits on a large parcel concerning land with other possible locations to find solar panels, according Arnold.

The generation station next to the St . Univoque River has been idle since newer 2013, the result of Ontario's decision end generating electricity by burning fossil fuel. The station is currently maintained alongside an small staff.

Ontario Power Output (OPG) is holding a community déclaration about its solar energy proposal when June 2 from 3: 31 p. m. to 8 p. mirielle, at the Courtright Community Centre when Third Street in Courtright.

"We're encouraging the public to come out to learn upon the renewable energy approval process, and we're going give a general overview of the endeavor, " said OPG spokesperson Neal Kelly.

The provincial Crown corp is proposing to build ground-mounted solar power capable of producing up to 30-MW concerning electricity at the Lambton Generating Repos site, if it secures a contract the Large Renewable Procurement process definitely run by Ontario's Independent Ardor System Operator.

The deadline to find projects to apply for this round concerning contracts is Sept. 1, not to mention Ontario has said up to 140 MW in solar generating capacity may well awarded to successful bidders.

OPG's plan is to install solar panels more 20-hectare (50-acre) area that consumes the old coal pile at the section, as well as on a 50-hectare (125-acre) discipline at the north end of the residences.

Construction could begin in 2016 and become completed by 2018 or 2019, with the project expected to operate to find 20 years, Kelly said.

Arnold claimed the aim "for all of us is to re-purpose that site to something useful, inch such as manufacturing, or converting the exact station to generate electricity using petroleum.

"I'm not sure if placing them (solar panels) where they're looking at with the best interest of doing anything on when site, " he said.

Along with a solar project would produce construction jobs, it wouldn't need to create many permanent jobs while in the site, Arnold said.

"They bring in essentially none, other than keeping the sod cut around them, " he other.

"And that's quite a change from the exact 700 (workers) we had on online business at one time, working away and create wealth in the community. "

There were approximately 300 workers at the generating station in order to stopped burning coal in 2013.

"It's possible we could bring the pieces back on a cleaner-burning fuel, while that will really be up to our investors, " Kelly said.

Along with the job role losses, the township took any kind of $1. 6-million hit to this tax revenue when Ontario determined to shut down its coal-fired plants.

Arnold said building a solar project in the exact location won't bring that lost levy revenue back.

"They won't bring in enough to even notice that these people there, " he said.

Generally if solar project goes ahead, it the third large solar generation online business in St . Clair Township, just where NextEra Energy already operates a couple children 40-MW solar projects.

"At the finish of the day, I'd rather have solar output than have wind turbines, " Arnold said.

"They're out of mind not to mention out of sight, essentially. "
